How to Check the DA History of Any Australian Property

A property's development application (DA) history tells you things a sales listing never will: whether that attic conversion was approved or done on the quiet, whether the neighbour has approval for a second storey that will shadow the backyard, and whether the street is about to get 40 new townhouses.

Every Australian council keeps a public register of development applications. The problem is that there are more than 500 of them, each with its own portal, search quirks, and data gaps. Checking a single property properly can mean visiting three different council systems.

What a DA history actually shows

A development application is lodged whenever someone wants council consent to build, demolish, subdivide, or change the use of a property. The register entry typically records the application number, address, a description of the works, the estimated cost, the lodgement date, and the outcome — approved, refused, or withdrawn.

The reverse is also useful: a refused DA on a neighbouring block tells you what the council would not allow there, which is often more informative than what it did allow.
